From Our Oivu Correspondent. After sonic very' changeable weather locally, a frost was experienced Monday morning, showing on the ground until eight o'clock in the morning. Social Afternoon. A social afternoon was held at the Methodist Parsonage last Thursday afternoon, the occasion being a “snow ball" afternoon given by Mrs Boston. A large number of the ladies of the church attended. An Interesting and unusual competition was heid, Mrs A. Currie being the winner after an exciting contest, Itev. C. A. Boston entertained the gathering with a reading on “Mrs Caudle's curtain lecture.’’ Afternoon tea was served by tho hostess. The bring and buy stall was next introduced and was well patronised. The proceeds of this were in aid of tlio circuit funds.
Tennis Club. Members of tho local tennis club journeyed to Pohangina on Saturday last, to participate in the opening- games of the Pohangina Club. A very enjoyable time was spent by all. Defence Rifle Club. Tlie weekly practice of the Ashhursl Defence Biflo Club was held last Saturday. Shooting was over the 300, 500 and GOO yards ranges, in line but windy weather. Good shooting was a feature ol the 300 yards range. Scoring however was of a lower standard over the 500 and 600 yards, a tricky left wind causing considerable trouble to most of the competitors. A changing light also made for hard shooting conditions. C. Thomson and T. Orr headed the list with !)3 eacii oft the l'iile. Detailed scores were as follow: C. Thomson 33, 31, 30, 03: T. Turner 27, 23, 28, S 3. Greer Shield Teams.
The club is endeavouring to enter three teams in the Greer shield competition to he held on Labour Day. Tin; following have been selected as the A team: Ken ltumley,, T. Orr, J. B. ,Searle, Hoy Bomley and B. A. Jones.
Tho following are asked to attend next Saturday's practice to enable the selectors to make final selection for the .No. 2 No. 3 teams: AV. G. Bomley, C. Thomson, S. J, Brookie, F. Bassett, Mrs B. A. Jones, \V. N. Brewer, C. Turner, CV Brewer. L. Matthews. M. Baton, A. Jensen, L. Jensen, C. Kalph, N. McKenzie. Anyone not available must let the secretary knew urgently.
