At the animal meeting of the New Zealand Public Servico Association held in Wellington, Mr. 0. 11. Butcher, of Palmerston North, was elected to represent this city on the executive.

Many messages of congratulation were extended to Mrs W. Simpson, of Waldcgravc street, when she celebrated her 82nd birthday yesterday. Mrs Simpson, who was born in Canterbury, has resided in Palmerston North for many years.

On the occasion of the diamond jubilee dinner of Court Manawatu, No. 5655, A.0.F., held last evening congratulations were extended to the chairman of the gathering, Bro. M. Rosanowslci, P.C.P., on attaining ins sixtieth birth dav.

At the meeting of All Saints’ branch of the Mothers’ Union yesterday, it was decided to send letters of sympathy to Canon I’aneourt, of Auckland, in the bereavement of his sister, Mrs A. Pink, of Palmerston North, in her illness, and Mrs Coleman, of Dahlia street, in Hie illness of her husband.

A local land agent in conversation with the “Times” yesterday said that, although he had not expected the hostilities in Africa to have any local repercussions, one big sale he had been working on recently fell through, because the prospective purchaser feared that liis son, for whom the land was to be procured, might, in the event of New Zealand becoming involved, be required to serve overseas.

Manawatu cricket circles will welcome the well-known Otago and Wellington cricketer, Air. D. A. R. Moloney, who takes up his residence in Palmerston North next week. He gained representative honours for Otago continuously from the 1929-30 season till last year, when he was transferred to Wellington, where ho quickly gained for himself a placo in the Plunkct Shield team and proved to be one of the most prolific scorers. <s> ■s><*><?-

Very few people realised just what a benefit friendly societies had been lo the people of the Dominion during the depression, stated the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Hansford) -when speaking at the diamond jubilee celebration dinner of Court Manawatu, No. 5655, A.0.P., last evening.. Tho speaker added that their funds had been depleted by this splendid work and ho hoped that the Government would eventually recognise the aid that had bcou given.
