River Gauge
Midnight: 4ft. 9ins. Fisherman's Luck on Opening Day PROSPECTS WERE NOT GOOD Yesterday saw the opening of the fishing season for 3935. Many enthusiasts went out but as far as could be gleaned last evening, the day proved a disappointing one for the majority. Unfortunately the rivers were rising as a result of a lot of rain in the hills and prospects for to-day are not as bright even. Tho season's prospects are as good as usual. Much will depend on whether a dry summer is experienced. It is seldom that droughts pull the rivers down below good fuming level, but when they do tho sport is not so good as when they are at their normal summer How. As usual before the opening, fish have been seen in considerable numbers in most of the streams. Mr. T. utidrews, the Acclimatisation Society’s ranger, made a start yesterday liberating fry, 90,000 being released in tho tributaries of the Ohau, 30,000 in the Tokomaru and 30,000 in tho Mangahao above the dams. On Saturday 125,000 will be liberated in tho Tiritea, Kahutcrawa and adjacent tributaries of the Manawatu river and after that further consignments are to be put iu the Otaki river and up Taikape way. Fishing in Waikato River.
A statement" of great interest to anglers in the waters of the Waikato river below the Huka falls has been mado by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. Sir Alexander Young).
"As the result of conversations with Mr. J. Gentles, chairman of directors, and Mr. Ernest Davis, managing director, I am pleased to bo able to state," said Sir Alexander, that Wairakei, Limited, has very generously agreed to allow holders • . trout fishing licenses freo access through its freehold property to the left bank of the Waikato river. This concession is subject to the very reasonable condition that anglers shall formally apply to the Wairakei Hotel for permission to pass through the property. "This action of the company was dictated by the desire of the directors to help the Department of Internal Affairs in its efforts to provide access for anglers, and is a happy compliment to the co-operation of the Lands and Survey Department in reserving nverbank strips. I take this opportunity oi publicly thanking the company, whose example I recommend to other landowners within aud outside tho Rotorua Acclimatisation District. To those acquainted with .he district, the valuo of the concession will readily be apparent. Until now a good stretch of riverbank in this locality has been of little practical use to anglers through lack of lateral access."
