Mr P. J. Kirkland leaves on Friday by the Mariposa for Sydney on business in connection' with radio development.
Detcctivo W. McLennan, of Pctonc, one of tho two members of tho New' Zealand Police Force who have been selected to go to New Scotland Yard for training purposes, was a visitor to Palmerston North last evening. After a long period of indifferent health, Mr George Richard Beamish, a well-known personality and pioneer settler of Hawke’s Bay, passed quietly aw'ay at his home at Whana Whana on Saturday afternoon, in his 7Gth year.
Mr. A. JI, Gray, senior telegraphist on the staff of the Danncvirko Post and Telegraph Office, has been promoted to supervisor, and is to be transferred to Ekctahuna. He will be succeeded by Mr. A. R. Whitton, telegraphist, of the Fcilding office.
Rev. C. S. Matthews, who recently resigned the pastorate of the Palmerston North Baptist Church, has accepted a unanimous invitation to the pastorate of the City Church, Silver road, Norwich, England, and commences his ministry there noxt Sun day.
Notice of his desire to retire on superannuation at the close of whatever leave of absence might be granted to him after December 31 was given by the superintendent and secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. 11. B. Burnett) at a meeting of the board. On December 31 Mr. Burnett will have completed 25 years of service with tho board, first as secretary, then as secretary and treasurer, and later as superintendent and secretary.—Press Assn.
The death occurred in a private hospital in Napier recently of Mr George Hclleur, a very well-known aud highlyesteemed resident, lie was GO years of age. The late Mr Hclleur was born at. .Lc Bou’s Bov, Akaroa, in 187-1, aud was the son of tho late Mr Frederick Hclleur, one of the early French sottiers of Akaroa. With his brother, he later commenced sheep-farming operations in the Pahiatua district, remaining there for a period of 25 years, following which lie went to Napier where he had resided for tho last 17 years. To mourn their loss he leaves a widow, five sous, three daughters and 13 grandchildren. The sons arc Messrs G. \V. Hclleur (Napier), A. F. Hclleur (Palmerston North), W. L. Helleur (Hastings), J. G. Hcfleur (Auckland) and A. H, Helleur (Napier), and the daughters, Mrs F. Jones (Hastings) Mrs R. Woolley (Auckland) and Miss Winifred Helleur (Napier).
