Reporting to tho Palmerston North River Board yesterday, Mr E. Fisher, advisory engineer, stated that; as a result of tho six successive abnormal Hoods in tho Manawatu river since May, there had been a distinct improvement in the river channel brought about by tho Board’s groyne works.

Improvements of an extensive nature are to be carried out at the Palmerston North Post Oflice where the yard outside the mail-room and between that and tho telegraph engineer's department is to bo concreted. Pathways are already laid down in concrete, but the completion of tho further work will greatly improve tho area, much .of which is now loose shingle.

The street dust nuisance was again before tho City Council last evening when complaints were received from ratepayers in College street west and Marie street with requests for tar-seal-ing. Both applications will be considered when next year’s estimates are under review as the council has aiready decided on this year’s schedule of sealing.

❖ <s> <s> ❖ Thomas Obadiah Owens, aged 70 years, told Sir J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday that lie would not go back to the home he had been in at Napier. Accused was charged with being deemed au idle and disorderly person in that he had no lawful visible means of support, and as lie had been tramping about the country the Beach decided to sentence him to a month’s imprisonment.

Many hundreds of parishioners of All Saints’ have received confirmation from Dr. G. H. Sprolt, Bishop of Wellington. It was mentioned by Canon Woodward at a church function last evening that the bishop had held his high office fpr the past 2-3 years, and during that tiino had confirmed an average of 100 candidates every year. The bishop was surprisingly active at the jubilee function last evening, but he announced with regret that the present wrnuld be his last official visit to what was a model parish, for the future progress of which he expressed all good wishes. <s><s><s><s>

‘ ‘ While commending the Government’s desire to lighten the burden oi unemployment relief, tho members of the club, representing a cross-section o± the business and professional community of Palmerston North, consider that the amount of unemployment relief granted by the Unemployment Board should be sufficient to render unnecessary the continuation of local appeals for relief, or—alternatively— tho Unemployment Board should undertake the entire financial responsibility of all relief committees, out of unemployment funds, so that- such committees be not further maintained by charity contributions as at present. That this bo forwarded to the district governor of the 53rd district with a request that he communicate it to all .Rotary clubs in New Zealand, to ascertain Rotary’s opinion on tho matter and—if deemed advisable —to submit it to Cabinet at an early opportunity." —Resolution passed by the Palmerston North Rotary Glub yesterday.
