Opiki

From Our Own Correspondent,

The garden circle under the leadership of Mrs W. Irwin, met on Monday. The members of the circle wish to have a stall for cut flowers and vegetable or flower plants at the next AVomen’s Institute meeting on October 16. Those intending to send in entries are requested to note that the competition is for the best banner design, to bo executed in the colours, blue and gold, if possible. The best design will bo used for the Opiki AV.I. banner, which it is hoped to enter in the Manawhenua group competition next February. Employees of the Makerua Drainage Board are engaged in planting willows around Hansen's bend wliyre the Manawatu river is threatening the ilood protection banks. The friends of Mrs S. Young will be glad to know that there was a slight improvement in her condition during the week.

Mrs Norman senr., of New Ijlymouth, is staying with her son, Mr B. Norman, in Ashlea road. Miss Dorraine Cooksley leaves on Monday to train for the nursing profession in the Palmerston North hospital. Mrs W. AYliite has returned from a holiday spent in Auckland. Miss C. Cooksley has returned home after visiting friends in Palmerston North.

Areas of native, bush are brightened considerably by the bright blossoms of the kowhai trees.

Everywhere can be seen evidence of ploughman’s skill, in preparing the soil for. the now season’s crop. The grasslands are growing very quickly, although they are being kept in control by the stock as yet. The growth is ahead of districts nearer Palmerston North. Lawns are especially troublesome and have to bo trimmed, frequently. Housewives will soon be spring cleaning again, much to the dislike of the husbands and families. Gardens in Opiki are looking beautiful and are a credit to the work of tho women of the district.
