From Our Own Correspondent. Mr J. H. Smith Farewelled. A pleasant evening was spent on Monday at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. K. Drew, "Brooklyne,” tho occasion being to bid faroweJl to Mr J. 11. Smith, who leaves at the end of the week to take up a position In Masterton. Mr A. K. Drew expressed his' regret at Mr Smith's departure, but as it meant he would be gaining further experlenco he wished him every success. Mr K. M. Pearce on behalf of the gueSls assembled presented Mr Smith with an oversharp pencil. In doing so -Mr Pearce said that although Mr Smith had only been in Sandon for IS months lie had become a popular member of the bridge club, football and sports clubs and was respected by all. Musical honours were then accorded tho guest of the evening. Mr Smith, in reply, said ho was takeii by surprise when being asked to accept the gift and stated that ho had enjoyed his stay in Sandon and it had always been a pleasure to have assisted the organisa-

tions he had been connected with. He expressed thanks to Mr and Mrs Drew for holding the evening. Tho ladies' whist prize was won by Mrs W. E. Pearce; consolation, Miss Eve Galbaily; men’s prize by Mr Don Grace; consolation, Mr, C. Guseott. Among those present were Mr and Mrs A. K. Drew, M.esdames It. Anderson, H. Pearce, B. J. Frecklington, W. E. Pearce, J. Watts (Feiiding), Misses Joan Watts (Feilding), E.- Galbaily, E. Pearce. J. Kilpatrick, F. Anderson, F. Palmer, R. Frecklington, E. Hope, N. Frecklington, Messrs C. Grace, K. Henson, S. Orr, D. Grace, J. Frecklington, K. Pearce, C. Guseott, M. Pearce, J. Bradley, W. Drew, W. Jenkins, G. Drew, H. Pearce,' and J. Palmer. Girl Guides’ Concert. The Sanson Girl Guides heid their first birthday on Friday evening last. The celebration took the form of a tea which was followed by a concert given by the Guides. The evening was a huge success and the committee responsible is to be congratulated on its efforts, Tho Guides had as their guests. Miss Willis, District Girl Guides Commissioner, Sandon Troop Boy Scouts, and the parents. Tho birthday cake made by Mrs A. Kilpatrick was cut by tho Commissioner, assisted by the Guido captain, M.iss M. Macfariane. The interval between lit© tea and tho concert was spent in competitions and games, which were greatly enjoyed by all. At a suitable juncture tho Guides were presented with their Service Stars. Tho concert drew a good attendance and special mention must bo made of tho stage effects which were arranged by Mr and Mrs U. V. Bond. Tho programme consisted of the foliowing items: Piano solo, Guide Shirley Bond; descriptive song, Guides M. Coulter, Flyger and Mildred Currie; guitar solo. Mr A. Rowe; playette, "Goorgo Washington,” Guides Ngairo Lawrence, Sheila Grace and Fiorrie Lammas; tap dance. Guides Margaret Coulter and Duleio Flyger; song, Miss N. Masters; folk dances, the Guides; elocution, Miss Joan .Maunderplayette, "Tho Tragedy of the Pen,” Guides Margaret Coulter. Doris Pearce, ’ I eiirl Meyer, uiid ITiorrie Lauunas; piano * solo, Guido Mavis Francis; 'cello solo 1 Miss Joan Maunder; pol dances, Guides; ' song, Miss N. Masters; elocution, Miss J. ’ Maunder; and camp fire, Guides. At tho 1 conclusion of tho programme, tho Cap- 1 tain of tho Sandon Guides, Miss Macfar- < lane, expressed thanks on behalf of the 1 Guides to the performers for their splen- ‘ did assistance, Mrs Biyn Lawrence for 1 teaching ihe girls the pol dance, and Miami Mrs Bond tor arranging tin- stage and lighting effects.
