Feilding Plunket Society Welcome to Miss Fitz Gibbon

A mothers’ afternoon to welcome Miss Fitz Gibbon, of Dunedin (nursing adviser of the Plunkot Society for the Dominion), took place on Tuesday at tho parish hall. Bowls of Iceland poppies and marigolds mado bright splashes of colour upon the stage, and the occasion was a particularly happy one, thero being present round about 100 members and friends, and babies inumorabi'e. Upon her arrival the guest of honour was presented with a charming posy of violets, while Mrs T. Collins .(Mayoress) was given ono of cream primroses. • Mrs'A. Sugden (first president of the local branch), Mrs J. H. Perrett (president of the Sanson branch), Mrs C. L. Williams (president of the Kiwitca-Kimbolton subbranch), and Miss Armstrong (Feilding’s Plunket nurse) were mado the recipients of delightful shoulder sprays. Mrs A. McCorkindalo (president of the Feilding branch), after extending a warm welcome to Miss Fitz Gibbon and all other guests, expressed on behalf of the committeo the pleasure felt at such an excellent attendance Of mothers and babies. In her remarks tho speaker emphasised the importance of the society’s work, covering as it does three stages—pre-natal care, the babyhood stage, and pre-school age. In referring to tho local branch Mrs McCorkindale spoke of the recent very generous gift .from Mr T. and Miss B. Kelly, of a valuable central section of land for a permanent building for the society. The transfer had just boon completed and the committee, together wdth the advisory board, were considering a campaign for building funds and also plans in connection with the rooms. The first donation had come to. hand from Miss Armstrong, who raised over £9 by a competition among mothers and friends, the winner of which was Mrs E. Churcher, of Te Pua. Other afternoons such as this would be held at suitablo intervals, said tho president, and the programmes ■would include competitions in needlework, knitting, soft toys and exhibitions of infants’ clothing, etc. Mrs McCorkindalo concluded her remarks by appealing to the mothers for greater co-operation in future activities, so that all should work happily together for tho welfare of tho children. A most interesting resume of Pfunket work was given by Miss FitzGibbon, who spoke of tho excellent achievements of tho Karitane hospitals in connection with delicate babies. Her instructive talk was listened to with great attention by the gathering, and a vote of thanks to tho speaker was proposed by Mrs Frank Mason and carried by acclamation.

In the course of proceedings Mrs Bruce McLeod, of Colyton, took the opportunity on behalf of both town and country parents to express their warm appreciation of the gift of land from Mr and Miss Kelly. Her remarks evoked loud applause. Mrs W. B. Gray voiced the thanks of all present for the very pleasant afternoon and the pleasure given by Mrs F. Collier, of Sanson, Mrs J. H. Coppock and Mrs Joblin (Kiwitea), who had rendered musical items. A break was mado for refreshments which, although quite simple, were daintily served and were much enjoyed.
