Laying Plans for Jubilee Show

DEPARTURE PROVIDES POR OPENING ON THURSDAY CO-OPERATION WITH RETAILERS FOR FRIDAY HALF-DAY Further plans for the November Jubilee Show .were laid by the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association at a meeting of the general committee yesterday. Tentative Programme. A report was submitted of the meeting held the previous day by the combined meeting of the jubilee organising committee and the horse section committee. The special sub-committee had canvassed the city for opinions regarding the i“oposed change oil half-holi-day for spring show week, the result being general approval of the change from Wednesday to Friday. The committee, therefore, recommended that the show be held on Thursday and Friday, November 7 and 8, and the gymkhana ou Saturday, November 1). The following programme was suggested:— Thursday: Judging of all live stock and home industries; trotting exhibition in oval. ~

Friday: Shearing competition; principal hunting events; jumping competition (three horses abreast); grand parade (2 p.m.); .children’s trotting events; buck jumping exhibition.

Saturday: Decorated vehicles or bicycles; cycle races in oval; steer riding; stock drafting competition; wheelbarrow race in oval; grand parade of dogs, special programme, for performing dogs and Highland dancing.

The horse committee has been asked to endeavour to arrange trotting events for each day.

-Mr. Kissling reported having attended the meeting of the Palmerston North retailers the previous evening,

when there was an overwhelming expression of opinion in favour of the Friday half-day for show week.

Moving that the days suggested be adopted for the show, Mr.. L. B. Wall said the arrangements proposed would bo excellent. In the past Wednesday had been a great attraction, but if the latter three days were adopted, stock judging would begin ou the Thursday. The proposed change was a special one in some respects, said Mr. J. A. Mitchell. Stock exhibitors would want to get home on .Saturday, and townspeople coming on the last day would complain (hat there was no stock in the pens. Mr. Kissling explained that Thursday and Friday would be advertised as the show proper, and the public would be asked to regard Saturday at a gymkhana.

Mr. T. R. Hoddcr spoke of the need for innovation to mark the jubilee show. Thursday, Friday and Saturday were unanimously agreed upon. There was some comment as to the need for providing a further attraction on the first day. Mr. Kissling said it might be possible to stage a buck jumping competition ot Thursday instead of as planned. The cost had proved too great to hold a buck jumping competition on account of the difficulty of securing a large troupe of horses. Lt was hoped to stage instead an exhibition with about half a dozen participants giving a real thrill.

Mr. S. R. Thompson favoured it steer riding exhibition on Thursday. This was agree i to, but steer riding will remain in the .Saturday programme. Mr. Kuther.-ir.d suggested that the wheelbarrow race sh- aid .be made a competitive event between business houses and local bodies. A committee was set up to decide on .the nature oi the event.

The meeting spent some time discuss ing details o ! ’ u. l edules. A motion was passed after seme dts

mission that, when there was competition in any section, full prize money would be paid for events in that section, even if a particular class had only one entrv.

In Recess. A letter was received from Mr. W. T. Fenny, secretary of the North Island conference of A. and P. Associations, advising that, owing to the decision of the Auckland Metropolitan Association to work with the Royal Agricultural (society, it liad no option but to go into recess. If necessary in futuro the conference could be reinstated, and in any event it was suggested that sec, rctariesshould continue to meet annually. Details of the arrangements for going into recess were submitted. Tho conference with the Royal Agricultural Society to discuss appointment of certain additional judges would not now be held. The president (Mr. .T. Batchelar): I do not think we can do anything with this other than to receive it. It was decided to record a motion of appreciation for the services given in the past.
