Overcome by Gas
TWO MEN RESCUED DANGER IN MANHOLE Per Press A.ssouLiUon. GIIULSTOHIuRCH, Lust .Night. Two employees of the Christchurch Gas Company had a narrow 7 escape from death when they were overcome by gas in a manhole this morning. They were Messrs G. \V. Inglis and A. W. Wylie, of Retreat road. It was due to the prompt and brave actions of a passer-by and a surveyor, Mr C. \V. Parton, that the two men wore rescued from the manhole before coming to serious harm. Both rescuers were affected by gas. The other men were rushed to the Christchurch Hospital by the St. John Ambulance. They made a good recovery and were discharged later in the day. Apparently one man was down the manhole in a small concrete chamber under the road, aud was overcome. His workmate called for help, and then went down to his assistance. Tho would-be rescuer was soon in difficulties also, but his cries attract-'.'.] a passer-by, who went down to give assistance. Air Parton, who was working with a theodolite about 12U yards further down Stravcn road, sprinted along and helped the second man out with the aid of a rope.
