Milson Women’s Institute Birthday Celebrations

GAY FUNCTION AT TERRACE END The Coronation hall, Terraco End, was on fete', on Monday evening, the occasion being a concert and dance in celebration of the third birthday party of tho Milson Women's Institute. The halt was crowded, visitors being present from many neighbouring institutes to offer greetings, and a delightful evening's ontcrtuiuincut wus pro* vided. No effort had been spared in the arrangements made by tho enthusiastic committee, the hall being charmingly decorated with greenery and. red roses (tho institute flower), with spiral shades to tho light enhancing the effect. The floor was in firstclass order and a gay crowd enjoyed dancing to bright music, interspersed with the concert items. The president, Mrs P. J. Murphy, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, expressing the hope that all would spend an enjoyable evening. Mesdames J. Eenwick and Childs were mistresses of ceremonies and were indefatigable in their attention to their guests and were ably assisted by other committee members.

During the evening opportunity was taken by Mrs Ohilds to present dainty shoulder sprays to Mrs Murphy and Miss Prentice (secretary) in appreciation of their services to the institute, the recipients briefly returning thanks. The two plays which had been so successfully presented at tho recent festival of drama by the drama circle, “The Twelve Pound Look” and “The Chimney Corner,” were repeated to the great delight of the audience, other itemsi contributing to the evening’s pleasure being as follow: —Graceful dance, Zoo Babone; vocal quartette, Mesdames Dymock, Robbie, Norris and Claplmm; institute sofig and national songs, Glee Circle, led .by Mrs Clapham; vocal soio, “Passing By,” Mr J. Bailey; clog dance, Master Henderson; minuet, Mesdames Hammond, do Vautier, Fleck, Hutchison, Huntington, Mudgway, Monro, Miss Terry (soloist Mrs Hutchison); character sketch, Annice Gilbert; vocal solo in character, “Floral Dance,” , Mrs Johnston, followed by. three country' dances by the minuet group, also Mesdames Johnston and Williams, Misses Proctor and Pederson (Mrs Monro leader). All tho items were enthusiastically recalled.

Accompaniments were , played by Mesdames Murphy, Clapham and Norris. "

At tho conclusion of the programme a bountiful supper was served aud the handsome . two-tiered birthday cake, which had been made by Mesdames Murphy, McKenzie and •Childs,' was brought'on-to the stage, Tho three candles were' 1 lit by the oldest memoer, ;Mrs Pitt, and blown out by thoyoungest, Miss Bet ty Clapham, and the cake Was cut by. Miss M. Grant, who offered good wishes from flic federation executive and Aok,autcre Institute. Greetings.were: also’conveyed by Mrs Leamy ; (Kairanga),.- Mrs,)"? Jackson (Bunnythprpe), Mrs 80nd.,-;(Awahuri) and Mrs Ale Ewen. (Tiakitahufia. On producing theVlucky threepence a dainty gift was, presented to Lois McKenzie. .

Dancing was continued until a late hour, a very , happy party terminating with ■ expressions of appreciation and the National Anthem. ,
