Saturday's Rugby Feature

SILVERSTREAM v. SACRED HEART PROCEEDS IN AID OF MAYOR’S RELIEF FUND On Saturday next Manawatu Rugby enthusiasts will he given the opportunity of seeing two of the leading collegiate Rugby teams in Wellington and Auckland in action, the occasion being the match between St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, and Sacred Heart College, Auckland. This match has been arranged to assist in the raising of funds for the Mayor’s Relief Fund, and should therefore be well attended, not only for the game's sake, but also to further the charitable work undertaken by the Mayor.

On only one previous occasion have the rival teams opposed each other, and that was at Palmerston North in .1930, when St. Pat.’s won by 22 points to nine. Sacred Heart, however, played St. Pat.’s at Auckland in 1923, before the division between tho town and Silverstream College, the mates resulting in a win for Sacred Heart by IS points to 11. Consequently, tho approaching game will decide tho rubber between tho two. Whatever the outcome, however, the class of football that will be displayed by the rival teams should be of a very high standard indeed, and more than the equal of any other matches seen in Palmerston North this season.

Sacred Heartehavc fielded particularly strong teams in recent years, and last season, after going through the second round of the college championship undefeated, they were runners-up to Auckland Grammar. This year their fifteen contains eight of last year’s “caps,” and though only two matches were lost and one drawn, and merely two points behind Auckland Grammar, they were third on tho championship ladder. Sacred Heart was the only team that won from Mt. Albert Grammar, and in addition to taking part in tho Auckland college matches, games were played, and won, against the combined secondary schools of ‘ South Auckland and Stratford High School. St. Pat.’s, Silverstream, have an cnviablo record in collegiate Rugby, and although the college has been established only a few years, its successes on tho football field already entitle the college to rank amongst the leading schools in the Dominion as a Rugby nursery of repute. The recent match against Wellington College, in which Silverstream displayed brilliant form to Win 31-16, was .declared by many to have been the best game seen on Athletic Park this season, and served to indicate that the colleges have much young material to offer the club 3 and fepresentative fifteens. Extraordinary interest is being taken in the match by old boys of both colleges, and parties from many of the surrounding districts, and as far afield as Gisborne, have announced their intention of being present. To give the ohl boys an opportunity of foregathering. they have been invited to attend, at their, own .expense, the dinner to be

tendered to (lie two teams hy (lie Mayoi ui'tcr Saturday xnateii.
