Highway No. 60
(To the Editor.) (Sir, —In to-day's issue of the morning paper, on a summary of works that could bo dona by the Public Works Department to help rid Now Zealand of a curse in the shape of unemployment, you mention the battle of the highways. Now, Sir, let ilia congratulate you on being the first paper to take up this stand. You state the least recognised is the most important OpikiMakerua route. Now, Sir, this is the only route worth considering, as it is the shortest and almost dead level. What more could a motorist ask for; and as they are the people who have to pay, why should they not have the best? Of course the Horowlicnua County Council, which collects the rates lioro and leaves us to make our own roads, is all out for the Makorua-Liji-ton route (Highway No. 60), and after the treatment Makcrua ratepayers have had in the past from this comity council, we need look for no help from it. Its chairman is so pleased with his handling of county affairs that ho is talking of entering Parliament, but he may yet need more than M.P. after his name to save No. CO highway from being blown up by the Highways Board. This board’s work is to give the motorists value for their money, so it is to be hoped they will look at it ia the same light as our morning paper when they have to decide at the finish and settle this burning question of flat roads or hilly. Thanking you for your valuable space,—l am, etc., JUST A DIGGER. Opiki, Aug. 16, 1935.
