Woodville Jockey Club

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Wo, the undersigned stewards of the Woodville District Jockey Glut), notice appearing in your daily paper of the 10th inst., a report of a portion of our recent stewards' meeting headed: “Stewards do not want new members.” No doubt to many of your rcadors this may appear a curious position. Had you, sir, been supplied with a more concise report of the meeting than such a misleading one, the position would appear perfectly clear. Mr Cj'rii Hunter, of DauheVirke, the proposer of the 27 Dannevirko gentlemen, is a candidate for stewardship at the forthcoming election and this no doubt accounts for his activity in rounding up new members from his end, and also especially in view of the fact that tho reduction in auministration expenses is not acceptable to a number of the principal officebearers of tho club, and definite sides have been taken. No steward has any objection to tho Daunevirke candidates for membership being elected but it is the principal involved Hence our reason for voting agaiusi their election at this juncture. Mr. Gaisford could have easily accepted Mr Bly's motion to hold the nominations over until the annual meeting. This was not , acceptable to Mr Gaisford, and we can conceive no other motive than that it was tlieir votes that counted most. If not, wfiy lie hasty about proposing them? Although Mr Gaisford declared Mr Hunter's candidates elected at the meeting, .it was no; discovered until tho next day that the election was invalid.

The ruling given by Mr Gaisford is that although wo are now in the new season of tho club's year the newlyproposed members can vote at rnc coming annua, meeting if niaue financial, and agaiu vote at the next annual meeting and have paid but one subscription. This gives them two votes for one subscription and a member can resign after having made use of his voting power at tho two meetings. Tins ruling, in our minds, does not; appear watertight. Yours, etc, R. (.1. SMITH. E, ELY.
