Fire in Pahiatua
HINDU FRUIT SHOP DAMAGED. From Our Own Correspondent. PAHIATUA, Last Night. A good save by the brigado prevented a serious fire in Pahiatua late this evening. The outbreak occurred iu Oxley’s buildings in Main street at the rear of the shop of a Hindu fruiterer. The scat of the trouble was apparently in tho large banana ripening room, and the whole of the wooden back portion of the building was gutted. Fortunately the members of the fire brigado were attending a meeting when the alarm was given, and were on the job in record time. Two leads of hose were run out, one from Scdcolc street and tho other from Main street. The fire had a good grip of the wooden structure, which luckily was separated, from the main structure by a brick wall. This assisted the brigade to keep the blaze from the main brick building in which four firms carried on business.
Two adjacout shops, the Hawke's Hay Fisheries and Miss Nunncrly’s frock shop were filled with smoke .and will probably suffer damage, but Mr. G. Oxley’s jewellery business appears to have escaped practically unharmed.
