EUTTER RISES SHARPLY CHEESE FIRMER LONDON, July 25. During tho past week the London butter market has had an active demand and displayed a tirin tone. Unsaltcd butters are scoree. On the cheese market there has been a firmer tendency. 'The following arc the present quotations, those for the previous week being given in parentheses:— Danish.—lOSs (102 s). Choicest salted: New Zealand, 93s (80s to 90s); Australian, 90s (86s to 87s). Limited: New Zealand, 90s (94s to PCs); Australian, Pis (80s to 87s). Cheese.—New Zealand: White, 4is Od (445); coloured, -14 s (43s Gd). Australian: White, cleared (41s to 425); coloured, 42s to 43s (41s to 425). COMPARISON TABLE. Butter: New Zealand choicest salted: This week 935. Last week SPs to 90s. A. month ago 90s, A year ago 78s to 795. 93s equals 11.Od per ib. butterfat payment. Cheese: New Zealand coloured.. This week 445. Last week 43s Od. A month ago 455. A year ago 46s Od to 475. 44s equals S.2d per lb. bufterfat payment. COMMENT The butter market has risen 3s Gd cwt. on the week. A year ago butter rose 5s on this same week. Cheese has recovered by Od from the extremely low quotation of last week. Twelve months ago cheese gained Is Od on this same week.
There is a distinct possibility of further and marked improvement on both markets.
The rising level of wages at Home should enable the consumption to be maintained at an improved price. The prospects for tho coming season may be viewed with modest optimism.
