U.S.A. to Meet Britain in Davis Cup
GERMANS LOSE IN BOTH SINGLES United Pres 3 Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, July 24. The two concluding singles matches in the inter-zone Davis Cup final at Wimbledon were both won by the United States, which thereby defeated Germany by four matches to one, and qualified to meet Great Britain in the challenge round. Tho results were: —
W. L. Allison (U.S.A.) defeated H. Henkel (Germany), (i—J, 7 —5, II —9. J. D. Budge (U.S.A.) defeated u. von Gramm (Germany), o—o, 9 —7, S—--6, 6 —o. Henkel never threatened to overcome Allison, who always appeared ablo to develop extra pressure when it was essential. Nevertheless, Henkel fought strenuously, and brilliantly saved two match points when the score was 7—o against him in the third set.
The match was fought out determinedly, many games going to several deuces.
Von Cramm, who was feeling the effects of his previous matches, was unable to stand up to Budge’s aggressiveness and brilliant backhand. The third set was fiercely contested, leaving von Cramm without reserves to stand up to increased pressure from Budge, who took six games in succession, and won the match.
