Hill, of the liner Niagara, and Captain Paul Graine, of the freighter King Egbert, the Wreck Commissioner, Captain L. H. Lindsay, states that the collision between the two vessels was unavoidable and that neither captain was to blame.

The Niagara and the King Egbert came into collision in fog on the night of July 17 when 40 miles off Victoria. The bows of both ships were damaged, but each reached port on the following morning under its own power.
