In Interests of Fire Protection

BRIGADE’S OPERATIONS IN CITY General matters in regard to fire protection in the city were dealt with yesterday at a meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Board. The Mayor, Air A. E. Afansford, presided and there wore also present Messrs L. 11. Collinson, J. Ilodgens, D. S. N. AfcCartnoy, and the secretary (Air C. Day). The acting-superintendent (■•lr P. A. Milverton) reported for the quarter that 27 call's had been answered. Eleven false alarms (1U being malicious) had been received; there had been nine chimney lines, two rubbish fires, ono call to a motor-cycle and four actual tires.

He stated, in reply to a question, that tho number of malicious calls was not any greater than had been received during another period when the brigade had been pestered by them. These calls, lie explained, seemed to be given in cycles and a lot had been received since last Christmas.

Insurance on property where fires occurred amounted to £60,750, whereas tho estimated value of the property totalled £119,155, it was reported. The contents were worth £63,900 and the buildings £55,255. Tho estimated loss on contents not covered by insurance had been £ls, and the estimated loss covered by insurance £59 Jss 9d, being £lO on buildings and £49 5s 9rl on the contents. The estimated loss therefore totalled £75 15s 9d.

It was rcsoived to carry out battery repair work locally. A cheque for £2 2s in appreciation of tho brigade’s services in turning out promptly to a false alarm to their premises was received from the Alauawatu Mills, Ltd., Broadway. It was explained that the private alarm system installed had been under test and a call had been accidentally sent to the station. —A letter is to be sent to the firm thanking it for its donation, but drawing attention to the fact that the cost of tlic turn-out had been £4 10s. Iu the event of a similar occurrence a charge would be made.

Alinor renovation work at the sta tion was sanctioned.
