District Scouters Make Preparations

RALLY TO BE HELD ON LABOUR DAY

Commissioner N. D. Stubbs, of Palmerston North, presided over the quarterly district meeting of the Manawatu Scouters' Association hold at Woodville. There was a strong representations from the city, Pahiatua, Dannevirko and Woodville, including Mr L. G. Callis, of Palmerston North, secretary of the district. A visitor, Scouter Jack Urshaid, late of Wanganui and now at Massey College, was welcomed to the meeting. Also present was Mr J. T. Jainc, the newly-appointed scoutmaster for the Woodville Troop, who is making splendid progress in his work.

The chairman reminded scouters that the picture of the Australian Jamboree celebrations would shortly be screened and urged that every scouter sec it. Correspondence was received as follows:

From the Palmerston North Central Relief Committee, thanking the scouters and scouts for their great help in making the recent postmen’s drive such a huge success. The Commissioner remarked that it was gratifying to have such an acknowledgement of work willingly performed. The movement would ever be readv to assist in a like man-

The Woodville Troop Committee advised that Scoutmaster A. Wiley had resigned and that the position was now tilled by Mr J. F. Jainc, whose warrant would be asked for in due course. The meeting cordially and in scout style, endorsed the appointment. The same writers asked for the warrant of (ho retiring scoutmaster so that ho should have recognition of his value to the scout movement. Steps are to be taken by the Commissioner to supply

Labour Day Rally Scouters from Dannevirko, where this year’s proposed rally will take place, were desirous of securing from troops information regarding plant and gear for troop work at the rally.

It is intended to invite Viscount and Viscountess Galway to be present,and also the commissioners in the districts adjacent to Manawatu. Scouters Chatticld, Hogg, Svvcctmaii, and Bycroft, with Rover Brittain, were cordially thanked for their work in preparing tire Jubilee lire at Palmerston North. Other troops received similar recognition for services rendered in the .Jubilee celebrations.

Scouter Hogg voiced regret that more use vVas not made of the cups and shields for competition which were held by the association. Thcro was the Herbert Smith Challenge Cup for swimming, for instance. Scouter Callis said there was a feeling that these competitions should be managed by an outside body, and it might bo possible to secure the help of the Swimming Association, which would formulate rules and appoint judges. Another idea advanced was to bold ail annual carnival. Commissioner Stubbs said he disliked competitions only when they clashed with real scout work. He was ever in favour of encouraging life-saving and swimming activities. The 'Monroe Shield ho reminded the meeting, was the property of the Caledonian Society, and it was only by arrangement that they could compote for it at all.

After a further discussion it was decided, on Scouter Hogg’s motion, that regulations governing the competition for the Herbert Smith Cup be drawn up by the Commissioner and Scouter Callis, competitions for the cup to tako place on a date to be {fixed, preference being shown for the period between December and February. Another shield is to bo allotted for inter-troop competition at the Labour Day rally. The thanks of tho meeting were voiced by tho Commissioner to Mr. A. H. Hustwick and his committee for providing supper and making the necessary arangcincnts for the meeting.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Miss G. J. Bryson, of the "Woodville pack, was presented by the Commissioner with her cub warrant. The Commissioner said lie was satisfied that she had merited it and he hoped she would continue to find pleasure in her work amongst tho boys.
