BUTTER FIRM CHEESE STEADY. LONDON, Juno G. The butter market this week has been firm in tone. The chceso market has shown a slow tone. Current quotations arc as follow, those for last week being given in parentheses:— Danish, 9Ss (9Ss). Choicest salted: Hew Zealand, 83s (81s to 82s); Australian, 82s (80s to Sis). Unsaltcd; New Zealand, 70s (SOs). Australian, 70s (SOs lo 81s). Cheese.—New Zealand: White, 43s to 43s Oil (435); coloured, 43s (Id to 44s (445). Australian: White, 51s (id to 42s (41s to 425); coloured, 41s 0d to 42s (not quoted). COMPARISON TABLE. New Zealand butter, choicest salted: This week, 83s. Last week, Sis to 82s. A month ago, 77s to 78s. A year ago, 78s to 7t)s. 83s equals 9.Gd f.o.b. New Zealand cheese, coloured: This week, 43s (id to 445. Last week, 445. A month ago, 455. A year ago, 44s Gd to 455. COMMENT. Butter prices are 4s to 5s above those quoted a year ago, whilst cheese prices are Is per ewt. lower. The Danish premium this week is Ids over New Zealand. Last season the premium averaged 19s per ewt. Reports from Home state that Danish is retailing at Is and New Zealand butter at 10d per lb. The Danish habit or prejudice, or call it what ouo will, must be very strong when consumers will pay an extra 2d per lb. Home advices still report butter shipmen Is irom the Continent and Britain to America. Butter stocks at Home at June 1 were 920,000 boxes, against 1,174,000 a year ago, a drop of approximately 27 per cent. New Zealand cheese is retailing in London at Gd per lb. The cheese market has been most steady, although slightly declining.
