HANDICAPPING OP TROTTERS It is reported that certain owners and trainers in Melbourne arc intent on getting the Commonwealth Trotting Conference to consider the universal adoption in Australia of a basis of yards to the second, when handicapping, erjual to the distance of the race in furlongs (slates the Sydney Referee). For instance, if the race is one mile, then the basis is to be 8 yards to the second; 1£ miles, 10 yards to the second; and miles, 12 yards to the second. The latter basis to remain the maximum basis no matter how much greater the distance of the race may become.

There is a good deal to be said in favour of the idea, but there is also a lot to be said against it. Practical trotting men consider 12 yards to the second as quite' a satisfactory basis. This is the general rule at present, but it is by no means perfect.

If S yards to the second wa? the basis of a flying mile at Harold Park, scratch horses would have little chance against some of the smart horses behind thorn.

On a 2.1 G basis, Walla Walla (2.G record holder for the Flying Milo) is now 9G yards behind. Basing his speed on 8 yards to the. second he would be only 04 yards behind. Fit and well on this mark, the others would be outclassed.
