Assisting The Returned Soldiers
RESOLUTIONS AT CHRISTCHURCH Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Protests against tho eviction of returned soldiers from their houses and properties were made at the annual meeting to-night of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association. A motion was carried urging the incoming executive to do its utmost to sec that all returned men who purchased hom-S in boom times should be gHcu c\cr\ assistance to retain them. The meeting also carried resolutions requesting the association’s headquarters to endeavour to obtain from the Canteen Funds Board at least £23,000, and from the War Funds Council £20,000 for tho relief of unemployment among returned soldiers during the pext 12 months. Support was given to a resolution that, in tho view of returning prosperity, tho Government be asked to restore the cuts iu economic and dependants’ pensions. “I understand that a member of our association has been been using the Jellicoe Hall for bookmaking.” declared a member. ‘‘He has been warned by a member of the executive and ho has. boen prevented from using the ’telephone at the club, but he still loiters round.”
The statement provoked an t uproar, and the meeting went into committee 'to discuss it.
