C. Brash, secretary of the Dairy Produce Board. He also declared as a falacy, the idea that the passing on of knowledge gained, would endanger a man’s position. No progress could be made unless knowledge was disseminated. When the police were making inquiries about a car, apparently abandoned near the city, it was found that tho owner, Alexander Thomas House, of Sanson, had failed to notify the sale of the vehicle within the seven day period allowed. As a result, House was charged in tho Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday with the breach and, pleading guilty, was fined £1 and 10s costs. <S> <3> ❖ <S>

Additions and alterations at the Palmerston North Courthouse have been in progress now for quite a considerable period, but it is expected that the work will bo completed in time for the Supreme Court sessions, commencing on May 7. Workmen have commenced painting the exterior of the building and even the fence frontage to Main street east is to be renovated. The completion of all this work will give tho large structure quite a pretentious appearance. <•? <s> <S>

Preliminary work has commenced in preparation for the re-building of the Commercial hotel in the Square, the plans for the new structure repealing a fine two-floor block with an octagonshaped sun-room —an architectural innovation insofar as Palmerston North is concerned. The laying of the foundation stone for the new two-storey business block adjoining the Post Office is also 'tinder way, wlvilo another important contract commenced recently is the building of a modern lock-up alongside the Central Police Station. <0 <s> <S> <S> When a 19-year-old youth appeared before Messrs A. J. Graham and J. T. Bosworth, J’s.P., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday, charged with the theft of a pair of battery tongs valued at 10/-, he was given a chance. Detective E. Barling explained that accused had been quite frank with the police admitting the offence. Ho had gone into a garage and had taken the tongs (which had been recovered) but it had been his first offence. The Bench convicted and ordered accused to como up for sentence if called upon within six months; leaving tho matter of suppressing the youth’s name to the discretion of the Press.

<*> <S> <s> <J> “We regard this as a deliberate breach and one that might have led to a serious accident,” stated the Bench yesterday when William Tingcy, formerly a city taxi-driver and now resident" in Auckland, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with negligently driving a car in the Square on December 22 last: Action was taken against the motorist by the Traffic Department, witnesses being called to prove that Tingey had disobeyed the instructions given him by a man on point duty. The driver had later told the inspector that his fare was in a hurry but had then left the town, leaving no address. He had only recently been traced after being told that he would be prosecuted.

<♦> <*> «> “You might be surprised at my making a distinction between Massey College and the Dairy Research Institute,” declared Professor Riddet when speaking to dairy factory managers gathered in conference at the College .yesterday. He explained that throughout tho country both institutions were looked upon as one whereas they were quite distinct both administratively and financially. Tho College was a teaching institution and its work extended beyond the limits of dairying, being interested as much in sheep as in cows and in agriculture as much as in pastoral pursuits. Professor Riddet added that it would make for smooth working to charge the right institution with its responsibilities.
