Sluggish River Drainage

MEETING OF BOARD Mr. F. Foster presided over the meeting of the Sluggish. River Drainage Board held at Palmerston North yesterday. There were also present Messrs H. N. Morconi, F. C. Print, \V. 11. Gimblett and M. J. Ryan. In his report for the month the overseer (Mr. W. Locke) stated that, since the previous meeting, Lane’s deviation drain had been completed, about 13 chains being deepened and about lift, of sand taken out. A start had been made on improving Lane’s drain and 50 chains completed. An inspection had been made of Leeu’s drain where it was found that cattle had tramped it down for about three chains. Where the concrete block had been put in at the Taikorea drain water was now coining around the side. The contractors in No. 2 portion of the Slain, drain had complained about dead sheep in the drain. Lane’s aud Craven’s drain had been passed.—The report was adopted. The chairman reported that, a meeting had been held at No. ti drain on March 11. Arrangements had been made for a hardwood block to lie put in the drain to catch the sand coming down and Jilling up the course.

In regard to an interview with the board’s solicitor the chairman reported that a drain made by the board, and not being a natural waleiyoursc, was not a drinking place for settlers’ stock and that any stock lost in the drain was not the responsibility of tlie board; any set tier damming the board’s drains by allowing cattle lo trample down the bank or cause damage by any other cause, was responsible. It was decided that men be put on to improvement work iu No. 0 drain as early as possible. The matter of removing sheep drowned in the Main drain was discussed and Mr. Gimblett appointed to interview the settler concerned

The question of concreting the fault to the concrete block in the Taikorea drain was left in the hands of the chairman and overseer with power to act.

The next meeting of the board is to be held on April 4.
