Country and United Parties Separate

SHORT TERM FOR NEW MINISTRY EXPECTED

Received Wednesday, 9 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 29.

A joint conference of the Central Council of the Victorian United Party, and tho Parliamentary branch of the party decided to discontinue the party’s association with the National Ministry. Secret voting resulted in 27 votes to 14 in favour of the resolution.

Because of this decision, three Country Party Ministers, Messrs Dunstan, Allan and Gouldie, tendered their resignations to the Premier (Sir Stanley Argyle) at a special Cabinet meeting to-day. Later the Premier announced the following reconstructed Ministry:— Premier and Treasurer: Sir Stanley Argyle. Attorney-General and Chief Secretary: Mr lan MacFarlan. Minister for Transport and Labour: Mr AV. S. Kent-Hughcs. Public AVorks: Mr J. P. Jones. Education and Assistant Treasurer: Mr H. E. Cohen. Lands and Forests: Mr T. I\. Maltby. Agriculture and Mines: Dr. Shields. Water Supply and Electricity: Sir H. E. Cohen. In addition, there are four honorary Ministers. The Deputy Premier will be Sir Kent-Hughes. It is expected that the Country Party will shortly oust the new Slinistrv and receive a commission to form one itself.

The composition of the parties is: United Australia Party 25, Country Party 20, Labour 17, Independents 3.
