Trans-Atlantic Service

LINES LEVIATHAN TO BE WITHDRAWN United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copy rich t. Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. WASHINGTON, March 10. The Department of Commerce to-day granted the United States Line permission lo withdraw the steamship Leviathan from the trans-Allantie service. The giant German liner, which the Government acquired during the World War and reconditioned at a cost of 8,000,000 dollars to be the flagship of the American lines, has been a continual financial failure. In exchange for permission to break its contract to keep the vessel in service, the line agreed to construct a sister ship to the Manhattan and the Washington, with the Government probably granting financial assistance under the Roosevelt shipping subsidy plan, now pending in Congress.
