Awahuri

I’rom Our Own Correspondent. What might have resulted in a serious collision was witnessed one night last week, when two motor-cyclists with sidecars attached wero speeding along at a terrific rato from the Palmerston North direction. At the approach to tho Awahuri bridge the leader suddenly steadied up, with the result that the one following close up had his work cut out to avoid colliding with his mate. However, his brakes were in good order, as evidenced by the skid marks, which measured about 100 feet. The experience, however, did not deter them from further speeding. It is a pity that more restrictions are not placed on the “speed hogs.” Thieving seems to be prevalent hero as evidenced by the loss sustained by Mr. J. M. Bennett, of Aorangi road, of half a ton of potatoes one night last week. Prom all accounts the intruder or intruders took advantage of the darkness and the small hours of the morning to commit the theft. No clue was left to solve the identity of the culprits. Mr. J. M. Giles presided over a full attendance of tho committee of the Awahuri Old Pupils’ Association on Wednesday evening. Matters relating to the raising of funds for the association were discussed and it was decided to promote a dance about April 10. However, full details as to the nature of tho function will be advertised later. With tho exception of a stiff easterly breeze blowing at the time, ideal weather conditions prevailed when the Awahuri School picnic was held at Kowhai park, Peilding, last Thursday. The services of a free bus were acquired, and at approximately 0.-15 a.m. it left the Awahuri Store filled to capacity with children, parents and friends. On reaching their destination, and prior to the running events, games etc. were wholeheartedly indulged in by old and young. It is believed/that about 150 people attended, which greatly assisted to make the day an enjoyable one. The catering for the day was in the hands of the ladies’ committee and left nothing to be desired. Apples, sweets and nuts were freely distributed. At a suitable juncture the chairman, Mr. W. A. Salt, thanked all those kind peoplo who brought baskets of eatables to the picnic and also made special mention of the kindness of the business people of Pending, who donated trophies. More than half of the prizes were donated by these people. It is only right, he said, that in view of what these people had done, that

the .residents of Awahuri should patronise them in future. In presenting the attendance prize to Ruby ■ Nicol, Mr. Salt said . that this child ha,d created a record for the Awahuri School in that she had not missed a. day during 1334,. thereby creating a. perfect attendance record. The sports points prize was won by Ruby Watson T, George Watson 2, 13 and 10 points respectively. Tho friends of Mr. H. Oke will be pleased to learn that he has returned homo after being' an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. The friends of Mrs. T. Stuart senr. will regret to learn that she is still suffering indifferent health. Betty, a young' daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Knowles, was taken by the Free Ambulance to the Palmerston North Hospital last Satura = v Her friends will

I no doubt, wish her a speedy recovery. The farming community is enjoying ideal weather conditions, green feed being in abundance while the stock are looking weii. Messrs. W. A. Salt and W.
