In view of lier marriage at Easter, Miss Florence Badger was tho guest at a card party held in her honour at tho homo of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Fox, Wakeman street, when some fifty guests spent an enjoyable evening in playing bridge and five hundred. Mr. Fox presented the popular 'guest and her fiancee with the many useful kitchen gifts received from those present. Mr. Jones suitably replied, especially thanking their kind hostesses. Another prospective bride, Miss Violet Bason, was given a party in her honour on Thursday evening, when a jolly time was spent by all those present in dancing, games and competitions. After Mr. A. W. White had made tho presentation to Miss Bason of the many useful kitchen gifts from all those present, her fiancee, Mr. S. Watson, suitably replied, thanking the many well-wishers present and especially the kind hostesses, Mesdames A. W. White, V. J. Scott and A. Chilman, who had arranged tho evening. Still another bride-to-be, Miss Inez Thompson, Pahiatua, who is shortly to bo married to Mr. E. Itussell, AVellington, was entertained at a gift party. Mrs. L. Beech had made tho necessary arrangements, and an enjoyable time was spent by her many friends present in old-time and modern dancing. Prior to supper, Mr. 1 1. Parker presented tho guest with the many useful gifts from all her wellwishers, and Mr. E. Russell, on behalf of his fiancee, suitably thanked ono and all. On Wednesday afternoon, a gift afternoon was tendered Miss E. Kerr, in the form of a garden party at the residence of Mrs. A. D. Donald in honour of her marriage in Feilding this week. The guests spent their time in playing bridge. Following the serving of afternoon-tea, the hostesses, Mesdames S. T. Tinney and C. Hodgir.s, asked Miss Kerr to accept the many gifts from those present, to which she fittingly replied, thanking tho hostesses and visitors for their kindness to her.
The spacious, charming grounds of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Richardson, Pahiatua, were the scene of an enjoyablo garden party arranged by the Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild last week. The many visitors spoilt their time in playing tennis, entering into tho various competitions and patronising tho several wellllllcd stalls, which did brisk trade throughout the afternoon. Rev. K. L. Warren thanked the patronisers for their attendance, the willing helpers for their work, and especially Mr. Richardson for the use of his grounds. The third fire within a short period occurred at the gasworks last week, when tho tar pots at the rear of the building caught alight, setting the nearby wooden fence ablaze. The manager (Mr. T. Burr), with several helpers soon put down tho flames and the services of the Fire Brigade, which had been called to the scene, were not required. Only slight damage was done. Last Wednesday night the Konini hall was filled to its utmost with dancers and visitors from far and near, who had come to spend a jolly evening at the Tutaekara Tennis Club’s ball. Many new and delightful frocks wero in evidence, pink being the. predominating colour. Supper was served by the members of tho club. A small but enthusiastic number of members attended the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Sheep Dog Trial Club, held last week, when tho officers for tho coming year were elected and arrangements were made as to the dates of trials, those fixed being Thursday, Friday and possibly Saturday, May 9, 10 and 11. A hope was expressed that more younger members would enter into the competitions and Mr. F. W. Bibby has donated a special prize for the youngest competitor. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr. F. W. Bibby; president. Mr. J. A. Gibson; judge, Mr. G. Carmichael; timekeeper, Mr. C. Lassen; ground marshal, Mr. F. E. Ward; committee, Messrs. P. A. Bissett, A. W. Bissett, F. Wiltshere, W. Bain, D. Foster, S. Purvis, T. Jones, F. F. Barraclough and T. J. C'oter. It was satisfactory to know that the finances showed a good credit balance. • Personal. Mrs. AV. Dalrymple, of Masterton. is on a visit to her mother, Mrs. J. J. Beech, Pahiatua. Mr. O. 11. Drucc, Kumeroa, is a passenger on board the "Rangitikei,” which sailed for England on Friday last. Mrs. L. D. Lovelock is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hole, Hatuma, Hawke’s Bay. Mr. and Mrs. Funnell, Auckland, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. Bason, Pahiatua. Mr. C. Holmes Miller, second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Holmes Miller, Ngaluri, has announced his intention of contesting the Pahiatua electorate as an "Independent” against the sitting Member, the lion. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands. Mrs. C. Walker, Mangatainoka, "who is at present in Auckland recuperating after an illness, has again been taken ill in that city, and her husband has left for tho north. Mrs. Walker is a vice-presi-dent of tho Bush-Wairarapa Federation of AVomen's Institutes and tho president of the Mangatainoka Institute. After an overcast day witli storm clouds in evidence and light showers now and then, heavy rain set in on Sunday evening and continued all night. It will be welcome by all and beneficial as it is a warm rain with an absence of wind. No doubt mushrooms will shortly make their appearance.
