From Our Own Correspondent. "Very hot, sultry weathc-r was experienced during the week-end, the thermometer reaching SO degrees in the shade on Saturday. The weather for some time now has been delightfully cool and, after such heat, farmers were fully expecting a downpour of rain which commenced on Sunday afternoon, resulting in pastures once more receiving a thorough soaking. The opening night of the new local hall is fixed for Friday, April 5. The evening will take the form of a social and dance and everyone is cordially welcome. Tickets are on sale from members of the committee.
The annual meeting of tiro Kelvin Springboks’ Football Club was held on Friday night, there being a good attendance of members present. The following were elected: —President, .1. McLaren senr.; patron, A. Laurence; lion, secretary and treasurer, G. Walker, jnr.; club captain, R. Mercer; management committee, S. Johnson, R. Mercer, A. Laurence, H. Judge, A. Mercer. The secretary reported an increased credit abiance of £4 5s lOd. New members welcomed were <5. and A. Walker, R. and C. Puklowski and J. Wood. It was decided to hold the first practice on March 25, which is somewhat earlier than last year, but it will enable the boys to get into good trim
before matches commence. “We arc sorry to state that we have lost the services of two members in Mr. Geo. Hancock, our club captain, who was a very enthusiastic worker in the interests of the club, and Mr, L. Flowers, a fine back In the team,’’ stated the annual report. It is hoped that players will pay strict attention to practice during the forthcoming season. In regard to the balance-sheet, the club shows an increased credit balance for the year's working, due to subscriptions and donations which were paid in a very generous manner. The thanks of the club are duo to all those who assisted financially, and also the Manawatu Rugby District Council, Referees’ Association, club captain, hon. secretary, and coaches. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman congratulated the team on its past season’s successes, and Mr. C. Tunnicliffe stressed the point that to win was not the only thing in sport. So long as the members retained a strong club spirit, each player giving of his best and playing a good, clean game, successes would come the way of the club. It was agreed that the club still carry on in the junior grade, one team to be entered. Five new members were elected to the club, and the procuring of a new bail was referreu to the secretary for attention. Some months ago the club lost one of its staunch supporters in Mr. A. Gray, who had assisted in many ways and also placed his ground at. their dispos%l for club practices. A letter of sympathy and condolence was forwarded to Mrs. Gray anl family. Mr. and Mrs. K. Ambler and family are leaving Kelvin Ctovo this wees to reside in Paramata. Miss M. Mercer has left to spend a holiday with her aunt at Murchison.
