Baking Industry in Sydney
REPORT TO GOVERNMENT. United I J rcss Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 10. Sir Herbert Gcpp, who recently inquired into the price of bread in the metropolitan area, has submitted his report to the Government, which discloses no exploitation of the consumers by the bakers. He emphasises that the bread baking industry in recent years has been subjected to the fiercest competition and embarrassing variations in the price of flour, due mainly to tax levies. Based on the present price of flour at £lO 17s 6d per t6n the average cost of manufacture- and distribution of a 21b loaf is 4.471 d and the average profit is .063 d. The price at which bread is being sold over the counter varies from 3fd to 41d per 21b. loaf, while delivered it varies from 31d to 6d.
There are approximately 400 bakers’ establishments in the metropolis, using 90,000 tons of flour annually and producing 120,000,000 21b. loaves of bread, providing work directly for about 3000 employees.
Sir Herbert Gcpp recommends fixation of the price of bread in accordance with the rise and fall of flour by means of a formula provided in his report.
