From Our Own Correspondent. Chess Club.

The annual meeting of the AVoodvillc Chess Club was held on Friday last, the president, Air. H. Ik Horne, presiding over a fair attendance of members. The president referred to the very successful season experienced during the past year. He stated that the attendance at the chess evenings had been excellent and the averago lor the season had been sixteen, which lie considered very good, taking into account that the financial membership of the club was eighteen, (juicers for the year were elected as follow: President, F. Page; vice-president, Al. Alunro; secretary and treasurer, E. J. Harding; committee, Messrs. H. P. Horne, G. AlcLachlan, G. L. Hartridge and the newly elected executive officers. Air. AlcLachlan presented the club with a demonstration board and a set of pegged chess men, for which he received the best thanks of tho meeting. New members were elected as follow:—Messrs. V. Armistead, S. Worboys, T. Turner, G. Turner and T. Smith. Opening night, April 5, will bo a visitors’ evening, and invitations are to be sent out to members of neighbouring clubs. Alessrs. Alunro nnct AlcLachlan were appointed as selectors and adjudicators for the year. Cricket. A further match in the Hunter Shield series was commenced at Dannevirke on Saturday when AVoodvillc met Phoenix. Batting first, AVoodville failed dismally with the bat being all dismissed for the small total of 48. Gallon 10 and Stanborough 10 were tho only batsmen to reach double figures. Phoenix at the drawing of stumps had lost four wickets for 8S runs. The match will bo completed next Saturday at AVoodville. Scores were as follow:
