Lawn Tennis

MANAWATU COMMITTEE MEETS Mr J. T. McDonald presided over last evening’s meeting of tbc Manawatu Committee of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association. There wore also present Messrs J. Christie, C. C. Yates, D. I. Robertson, L. D. Lovelock, and the secretary (Mr J. H. White). Several apologies for unavoidable absence were received. Hawke’s Bay Association wrote slating that March 9 would not bo suitable for tho Christie cup macth, but* suggested March 2 or 10. —Tho chairman stated that tho match had been arranged for March 10. Wanganui Association suggested visiting Fal'merstou North on March 23 and asked, in the event of Hawke’s Bay being defeated, that tho match be treated as a Christie cup fixture, —Palmerston North club is to be asked for the use of its courts for the occasion.

It was pointed out that tho match could not, unfortunately, bo treated as a Christie cup match owing to tho ‘rules stipulating a challenge 21 days in advance.

Bulls club wrote seeking permission to play a match against tho Colytou club on March 9 at Bulls.—This was granted. Wairarapa association invited a team of six men and six _ ladies to Carterton on March 9 for an association annual match. —The invitation was accepted. Mr R. Ilardie-Boys, the association’s delegate to tho parent body forwarded a comprehensive report on the council’s business.—lt was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the writer for his interest in tho association.

Lengthy correspondence was received from Mr 11. N. Watson, of Palmerston North, relative to tho ladder championship. Ho pointed out what he considered to bo mistakes in the system. —Tho chairman pointed out that there had been nine challenges received in a fortnight. It was very difficult, stated Mr Yates, to conduct a ladder properly over such a widespread district. Members generally agreed that tho ladder should be given a chance. It was decided to thank Mr Watson for his letter and explain that while it was appreciated there were difficulties, it had been decided to carry on this year, and in the event of it proving a failure that a subcommittee would bo appointed to go fully into the matter next year. It was decided to write to Mr Watson asking him if ho could supply the names of teams that had represented tho association, this being required foi compilation purposes. .
