“Defence”
(To tho Editor.)
Sir. —May I congratulate you upon your timely leading article in your issue of the 19th entitled ‘‘New Zealand Undefended.” I wish also, to ask your correspondent, Mr. Archer, a few questions. Pirstly, Mr. Archer holds the view that the Japanese aro not an emigrating people. Does this tally with the experiences of British Columbia and California? Only the most stringent laws have prevented those States from being swamped with Japanese. Secondly, Mr. Archer seems most concerned as to the expense of defence. May I ask Mr. Archer, does one consider the expense of a doctor in a ease of life or death illness; National defence is very truly a matter of life or death importance. Thirdly, just what is the insinuation behind Mr. Archer's last paragraph: “force is not always used to repel the enemy outside. It sometimes keeps in subjection those who arc inside.’’ Surely we are not to regard a reasonable defence proposal as a threat to our Democratic Government? Bir, public opinion in this Dominion requires “waking up” as regards defence. Parliament will never move unless public opinion is moved. Your leader is to be commended. I trust that Mr. Archer will bo so good as to answer tho questions herein propounded in all sincerity. —I am, etc., “A NEW ZEALANDER.”
