Defence?
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Your leading article in Monday morning’s issue cannot bo allowed to pass unchallenged. Are we to become an armed camp, ever ready to oppose some mythical enemy, and arc we to bear a crushing burden of taxes to maintain a standing army that is never likely to be of any use • whatever? If the hordes of Asia were to descend upon us, of what use would 50,000 troops be to oppose their millions? Rather, let us support the League of Nations and dwell in harmony with all men. Tho League is mankind’s only hope of salvation. Our defence, should any be ever required, would be world opinion. The day is surely coming when that power will be recognised; if that cannot save us, “defence” will not. —I am, etc., “PEACEFUL CITIZEN.”
