The laic Mr l’earce served the ratepayers well and conscientiously discharged bis duties as their representative. The speaker received a severe shock when he learned of Mr. Pearce’s sudden passing, for it was less than 10 days previously that Councillor Campbell had attended the jubilee celebrations of the Colyton School, where he listened to Mr Pearce speak oil the pioneer days of the district. The late .Mr l’carcc had been a pioneer settler of the district and one who had left behind him a happy memory. Councillor AY. He had held the position of chairman and honorary treasurer of the council, and his endeavour had always been to serve I lie best interests of the county as a whole. He never entertained the parochial view, and always stood up for the fair thing. He sincerely regretted the passing of Mr Pearce, and knew that no member of flic council had furthered t lie interests of the county more in his dnv than their departed friend.
Councillor AY. McLennan said that lie had served for many years with the late Mr Pearce, and could support the remarks that Mr Pearce had always endeavoured to be impartial and fair in all his dealings as a councillor. A resolution placing on record the council’s very sincere sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr Pearce was carried in silence.
