Motoring in Manawatu
A.A. ACTIVITIES v Mr N. 11. Mackio 'presided at a meeting of the executive of tho Automobile Association (Manawatu) lastevening. The Manawatu County Council advised that its engineer would be preparing an estimate of the cost of improving the cutting near the Taikorca school. The town clerk advised that the City Council had considered the question of traflie control at the intersection of the Square and Raugitikei street, and considered the time had not yet arrived for the placing of men on point duty there. The chairman said tho Chamber of Commerce was agitating for further consideration of tho matter by the City Council, with tho view of getting an officer at the intersection on Thursdays and Saturdays. The council had done wonderful work in connection with motor parking and the like, while it also received hundreds of pounds in revenue from drivers’ licenses. It was not asking too much of the council to control the traffic on the two days mentioned.
Mr Edmunds said it spoke wonders for tho motorists of tho city and district that no serious accident had occurred there, the way people jaywalked across the street. As regards automatic control, the effect was to delay traffic unless an intersection was very busy.
The chairman said the mere prciy once of an officer at a corner had a moral effect on the traffic. It was decided to renew the request with the City Council.
lvairanga County Council tendered its appreciation of the action of the association in erecting warning notices to motorists at the intersection of Bunny thorpc-Ivairanga road and Rangitilcei line.
In his road report the service officer (Mr V. Crichton) stated that tho deviations now under construction near Turakina on the Wanganui main highiyay are well under way, the particular portions being very rough at present, and motorists arc advised to drive carefully, especially in wet weather.
Signposting. —Alt roads requiring new signs arc being recorded and a special report is to be submitted to the signposting committee later. Six new signs have been erected since the previous meeting. Races. —The roads were patrolled both before and after the Marton races. The Wanganui racecourse was visited on both days and tho usual road patrol and inspection work carried out.
General services.—The following services were rendered for members of the automobile associations: Punctures, S ; benzine trouble, 2; electrical trouble, 3; other mechanical defects, 2; tours and road conditions explained, 14. Show. —In order that preliminary arrangements may be made I would again ask the committee to consider granting permission for the erection of a stall at the forthcoming summer show.
Hotels. —The annual inspection of -the hotels lias boon completed and the inspector (Mr Ringer) expressed the opinion that the standard of accommodation available in the city is vciv high, and it was very gratifying to note that in some hotels vast improvements had been effected since his previous visit.
Appreciation—This being the last mooting before tho election of the new committee, I take'tho opportunity of thanking the present executive for the confidence it has reposed in me and its valuable advice and assistance, also the members of this association who. by their co-operation and support, contributed in various ways towards improving the conditions for the motoring public. ‘ ’Gct-you-homc” Service. —All arrangements in connection with the appointment of official garages have been completed. The service officer was granted permission to erect a stall at the show and necessary signposting work is to be proceeded with.
Forty-four new members were elected.
The annual meeting is to be held on October 5.
The chairman reported Hint the N.I.M.U. proposed to submit evidence to the Commission -that would bo inquiring into motor taxation.
Air Mackte also voiced appreciation of the help given at, various limes bv rndio stations 2ZO and 2ZF, and the committee decided to vole one guinea to each station.
The question of arranging a tour to somo close at hand picnic spot was discussed, and the service officer was given permission to arrange such an outing.
Mr Edmunds offered a donation of a guinea on behalf of his firm towards a competition to be held on tho day of the outing, and the service officer (Dir Crichton) came forward with a similar offer. Both were heartily thanked.
