More Hopeful Vista for

Shipowners

FEWER SHIPS, MORE FREIGHT,

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Sept. 18. ,

The hope that the steps now being taken to relieve the difficulties of shipowners will soon bring a return of a reasonable measure of prosperity to merchant shipping is expressed in a report of Lloyd’s Register for the year ended June 30. . It says that tho world tonnage laid up at the present time is 8,000,000 tons, compared with 32,000,009last year and 15,000,000 two years ago. A tonnage of 2,700,000 has been sold for breaking up and 289,000 lost. As a result world tonnage is now 05,000,000 compared with 70,000,000 in 3931. Tho total still exceeds the demand of tho freight market, but a gradual elimination of surplus vessels opens a more hopeful vista for shipowners.
