Car Going to Funeral Rolls Down Hill
FIVE PERSONS INJURED Por Press. Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Five persons were injured to-day when a car in which they were travelling to. a fur oral at Port Levy left the road and rolled down a hill'. The accident occurred about 11 a.m. The injured persons, who wore not discovered until an hour and a-lmlf later, were taken by ambulance to the Christchurch hospital. The car was damaged beyond repair. The persons concerned and the nature of their injuries were: —H. A - Candy, Oxford terrace, Christchurch, head; Aiiss A. Candy, Bangor street, head; Airs AI. A. Baynes, Proctor street, head and leg; Airs C. E. Halsey, Lines road, head and leg; Mrs L. Duns, Bangor street, face. All but Airs Duns, who was able to go home after treatment, were admitted to tho public hospital.
The accident happened 31- miles from Purau, near the top of the hill on the wav to Port Levy. lho car fell L> feet down to a wire fence, smashed through this, overturned and rolled down a slope of 300 feet. The passengers were thrown out at intervals before the car came to a stop.
None of the passengers to-night could give an account of the accident and there were no eye-witnesses. It is believed that the driver tried to change gear and the ear stalled and ran back on the steep gradient.
