Good Wrestling by Meyer and Sonnenberg
LATTER TAKES DECISION IN SIXTH ROUND Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Gus Sonnenberg, former worlds champion, defeated Dr. Fred .Meyer by two falls to one in the Wellington show stadium this evening. A big crowd, which expected fireworks from tlic new arrival, was given a surprise, for it was Sonnenberg who took most of the punishment. Right near the end lie looked so groggy that a victory for Meyer appeared certain; but ‘so quickly did Sonncnbcrg secure his two falls that one wondered if he could hot have won in less than six rounds.
Meyer got the first fall in the third round after dazing the other with jolts. The equaliser came in the fifth after solid dumps, and the decider m the sixth, when Meyer was rendered helpless with butts. A high standard was attained in the New Zealand amateur wrestling championships, which were decided tonight. Seven of the eight titles were .won by the North Island, and of these four came to Wellington. Details are:
Flyweight: G. Mollier (Wellington) beat It. H. Mundy (Christchurch) by straight falls. Bantamweight: L. Nolan (Wellington) beat J. Dick (Dunedin) by straight falls. Featherweight: L. Nolan (Wellington) boat S. Todd (Christchurch) by straight falls. Lightweight: R. Hutchinson (Wellington) beat G. Terry (Dunedin) on "points. Welterweight: V. Rawle (Auckland) beat F. Carry (Dunedin) on points. Middleweight: L. Goughian (Dunedin) beat J. McDonald (Auckland) on points. Liglit-hcavyweight.: It. Douglas (Auckland) beat A. K. Asher (Christchurch) on points. Heavyweight: W. E. Shattock (Waikato) beat T. Anderson (Dunedin) by a fall.
