Mid-week Rugby Games Finalised

STAR AND ST. PATRICK’S PLAY TO DRAW.

The mid-week series of Rugby matches in Palmerston North concluded yesterday". The only game to be played in the city was that between Star and St. Pat 's, the outeomo being a draw with 9 , points scored by each side. The ground was much too hard for good football. Star led G—3 at the interval. Within a few minutes of the opening Edhouso went across for St. Pat’s, Star replying later with a penalty' goal kicked by Coekburn and a try gained by Edhouse. Soon after the change-over J. Hanley' evened the scores with a try after a good handling movement. He repeated the effort before the final whistle, -while a crossing by Bovis on Star’s behalf made the final tally 9—o. Mr. I. Ross refereed. With the series concluded, the teams’ position is as follow:

RUGBY DINNER. Last evening players' and others interested in the mid-week Rugby scries, including representatives of the Manawatu Rugby Union, gathered at dinner to celebrate the conclusion of a season of Wednesday' football. Mr. C. Eglinton presided. .

A community sing, which was led by a professional orchestra, was .boisterously' participated in by a large gathering- of , players and others interested in., the game. . After, the .several toasts had been honoured various speakers touched on tho matter of Wednesday football, and it was generally agreed , that the midweek games filled a long-felt want as

far as the rugger-minded people, players and “fans” were concernM. Mr Eglinton, speaking in connection with the Wednesday enterprise, said that although tho standard of football had necessarily been lower than that of the Saturday' games, there was ample evidence that Wednesday football was here to stay. Although the initial difficulties had been great they had been overcome, largely by the splendid ; efforts of Mr A. IVard and Mr F. Donnelly, to whom the gratitude of the players and those interested were due. Even though the football played was not of tho highest class the Wednesday organised games had enabled some SO players to participate in the national, game, who would otherwise have had no opportunity' to indulge in the favourite winter pastime. Other speakers spoke in similar vein and all expressed the opinion that the midweek competitions had been eminently satisfactory from the points of view of all concerned. ■ The - function was voted a fitting wind-up to a,promising season.
