AUTOGIRO IN ANTARCTIC. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MONTREAL, Sept. 5. Little America reports that the first spring operation of the expedition was officially started on Tuesday, when the pilot took the autogiro to a 7200 ft. altitude to make atmospheric soundings. He descended when he found the revolving blades out of adjustment. The temperature was 38dcg. below zero. The pilot reported the opening of tho Bay of Whales as free, of ice, while fhe Ross Sea is entirely open.

■ The party has started digging up the aeroplane buried by the first expedition. Reports from Bolling Base state that Admiral Byrd’s recovery continues, but the date of his removal is indefinite.
