Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. _ RUGBY, Sept. 4. The steadier tone which prevailed in lho foreign exchange market yesterday is attributed by the Press to the operation of the exchange equalisation account. The recovery of sterling continued this morning and gold of the approximate value of £BOO,UOO was disposed of at 140 s 101(1, a decrease of S)d, the price being based on supply and demand and including a premium of 2s over the dollar at 5.100* and 44d over the franc at 74 13-10.

The Exchequer returns show “all sterling" exclusive of self-balancing items. The total ordinary revenue received during the current financial year to September 1, amounts to £237,005,278. At the corresponding date in 1933 the amount was £241,045. The total ordinary expenditure to date is £287,228,208, which is 21 millions more than at September 2, 1933. The revenue collected in the past week totalled £8,588,8(55, of which £4,931,000 represented inland revenue and £3,020,000 Customs and excise revenue. Receipts from income tax to date at £47,339,000 exceed by over £7,000,000 the amount collected by September 2, 1933, but the revenue from estate duties is £3,000,000 lower, at £36,130,000.
