Halcombe

Tho annual reunion of the Halcombe sub-branch of the Fellding R.S.A. took place in tho Halcombe hall last Friday, when there was a good muster of returned soldiers, many visitors being present. Mr. T. R. Vile, president of the subbranch, presided. Songs were contributed during the evening by Messrs Sutherland (Bulls), G. Burgess and S. Managh (Halcombe). Tho president, after welcoming the visitors from tho various sub-branches, proposed the toast of ‘‘The King,” after which the following toast list was duly honoured:—“Fallen Comrades,” proposed by Rev. W. Bayliss; "N.Z.R.5.A.,” proposed by Mr. Hay (Fellding) and responded to by Mr. Gregory (Marton): “Kindred Services, Army, Navy, South African Veterans and Air Force,” Mr. A. Hutton—Mr. Tavenard, R.N.; “Radies and Nurses,” Mr. W. Page—Rev. Mi'. Lane (Bulls); “The Visitors,” Mr. Warner —Messrs McDonald (Marton), Churchill (Bulls) and Major Bruce McLeod (Fellding); “Our Hosts” (Halcombe R.S.A.), Mr. Churchill (Bulls)—Mr. T. R. Vile (president); “The Press,” Mr. Ivo McLennan—Mr. F. SI. Saywell; “The President” (Mr. T. It. Vile), Mr. Brooks (Ohingalti). The fortnightly euchro and dance In aid of tho Halcombe School funds was held on Friday evening and was again well attended by euchre enthusiasts and (lancers. Tho following wero the prize
winners: Ladies, Mrs. A. Wishnowsky 7, Mi's. F. Cowdrey 2; men, Mr. E. Hill 1, Master Frank Dais 2. Tho music for the dancing was kindly supplied by Messrs S. Williams, McMillan and D. Wishnowsky. Mrs. McKitterick, of Dunedin, is at present visiting Mr. and Mrs. S. Williams.
Mr. J. McKenzie, of tho Post Ofllco Department, was a visitor to Halcombe during tho week-end. - Miss G. James paid a visit to Wellington during the week-end. Mr. J. D. Lynch, of the Tost Office staff, who is absent on sick leave, is being relieved by'Mr. L. A. J. Osmond, late of the Ohakune office..
necessity of tlic additional proposed groyne work.—The board agreed to the proposal. Trustee Hodgens’ name was added to the standing committco which 'is supervising tho work. A communication was received from the Palmerston North unemployment officer, Mr W. If. Cadwali'ader, stating that, as the board was paying its relief workers tho difference between standard anjl relief rates, no standdown week on reduced rates would be imposed. At tho request of Trustee Tremaine, the engineer and tho clerk were instructed to report to the next meeting on tho possibility of tho board giving permanent employment to . a greater number of men, rather than effect the majority of its work by relief labour. Statement of Rates Rates for years 1933-35: Rates struck as per estimate, £2.170; less payments to date, £309 15s 9d; outstanding, £IBOO 4s 3d. Arrears: Amount outstanding at 1/4/34: £624 5s lid; less payments to date, £IQS 9s 2d; outstanding, £515 16s 9d.
