High School Will Have Science Block
INTIMATION TO GATHERING OF PARENTS. Parents of pupils attending the Palmerston North Boys’ High School held their annual meeting in the school assembly hall last evening, Mr. A. Grigor presiding. Tho previously-published report, with balance-sheet (showing a credit of £65), were adopted. Mr. Grigor said ho would havo liked to see more present to evince au interest iu the school. However, more support might be forthcoming later. Speaking to the report, the president said its weakest fcaturo was a drop in members’ subscriptions, but this was merely a sign of the times, and in the coming year an improvement was anticipated. Activities had been spread over a wide field, the sum of £IOO being spent on the school out of the receipts for the year of £IOO. The executive elected comprises: Mesdames H. Palmer, C. Louisson, N. H. Sinclair, G. A. l’orrest, A. A. Langley, C. A. Small, J. Davidson, H. Christinas; Messrs. A. Grigor, R. T. Jaggard, E. S. Oliver, G. G. Priest, A. A. Langley, W. Clegg, G. B. Cope, A. J. King, 11. Christmas. Mr. S. Smith was reappointed treasurer, and Mr. O. Teppett was returned to the office of secretary. Mr. K. S. Glendiuning remains the association’s auditor. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the rector and staff for their services to the school in both scholarship and sporting during the past year. New Science Block. As chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., said tho board could look back on many years of fino work dono by the association. To glaucc round the assembly hall gave evidence of tho fine work, although the efforts of the association had by no means been confined to this avenue. Palmerston North had good reason to be proud of its schools. “It gave mo great pleasure to-day to sign tho contract for the erection of new rooms adjacent to the school. Theso rooms should havo been provided for Mr. Murray and staff years ago, but tho work had to be postponed. However, this valuable adjunct Las now been authorised, and the work will be executed without delay,” said tho speaker. In conclusion, Mr. Nash expressed tho board’s heartfelt thanks for tho work dono for the school by the association, and pointed to the fine opportunities the city afforded for secondary education. The rector (Air. J. Murray) said he appreciated to tho full tho work of tho association for some years past. It had been a great assistance and encouragement for the staff, aud had been achieved at considerable personal sacrifice by members of tho executive. The science block would bo a great asset, said the rector, but looking into the future, ho still had visions of an art room being added to the institution. Mr. Grigor acknowledged tho tributes paid to tho executive’s work. During the evening the gathering was entertained by an excellent playette, the offering of the School Dramatic Club. Novelty lent added interest to the production, the cast being an “animal ” one. The play chosen, the work of F. Sladen Smith, was “Mitt Noah Gives the Sign. ” Participating were C. Aikman (Airs. Noah), J. Pizzey (Air. Elephant), R. Stevenson (Airs. Elephant), B. Tremaine (Air. Lion), B. Philpott (Air. Tiger), B. Carter (Mrs. Lion), W._ Carter (Mrs. Tiger), E. Chapman (Air. Hippo), G. Cameron (Airs. Hippo), L. Rickard (Air. Crocodile), W. Alcock (Air. Noah). Air. A. C. Zohrab was producer, and this sample of school dramatics was quito as popular as tlioso witnessed in previous years. During the early part of tho evening an opportunity was given parents to converse with members of tho staff regarding the welfaro and progress of tho pupils.
