Easy Win For Australians

Oxford Beaten by an Innings CENTURY TO CINGALESE BATSMAN United Press Association—By Electrf: Telcgrapli—Copy right.) LONDON, May 21. Australia defeated Oxford University by an innings and 33 runs. An attendance of 5000 before lunch increased to SOOO after tea. The weather was dull and the wicket good. For the resumption of play to-day the position was that Oxford University had made 5 runs for two wickets after having dismissed Australia for 319. There was a sensational beginning of the day’s play. FleetwoodSmith was brought on to allow Ebeling to change ends, and in his first over he clean-bowled Mitehell-Innes, Chalk, and Stainton, who fell to the first, third, and fourth balls respectively, no runs coming from the other deliveries Fioetwood-Smith flighted off-spinners into a stiff breeze, and completely deceived all three batsmen. After this the score was advanced to 48, at which total two more wickets fell—those of Walker and Tindall.

Aport from Fleetwood-Smith’s performance, Ebeling was having his most successful appearance of the tour. He obtained two further wickets, getting Barlow and Singleton with successive deliveries. The side was all out for 70 after batting SO minutes. Oldfield was in excellent form behind the wickets, his flue work including the stumping of two batsmen in finished style. The wicket was not really difficult, but Flcetwood-Smith turned the ball abruptly-

Oxford University followed on, and at lunch had made 16 runs without loss. Grimmett and Ebeling bowled after lunch, the latter soon dismissing Townsend with a fast in-swingcr. Two overs later, the same bowler, finding the wicket more' lively, had Walker well caught behind. Mitehell-Innes and do barm scored well until Mitehell-Innes was also caught by the wicket-keeper. De Sana and Chalk figured in a promising stand, which was broken when Chalk fell,a victim to the GrimmettOldfield combination. De barm was batting with admirable soundness. Scoring 10 in one over from Grimmett, and lifting Fleetwood-Smith for 6, he reached his half-century in 90 minutes. He continued to bat attractively after "tea, but lost Stainton, who had batted stubbornly for 95 minutes for 12 runs. De Sarni powerfully swung successive balk from Grimmett for 4 and 6. His splendid century occupied 165 minutes. He then hit out with abandon, straightdriving Grimmett for 6 and swinging Fleetwood-Smith for another 6. Eventually Grimmett had him nicely caught on the boundary. He batted for 185 minutes and his, sc.oro of I2S included four 6’s and eighteen 4's.
