Falling Brick Hits Workman on Head

ACCIDENT IN THE SQUARE Severe head injury was sustained yesterday morning by C. Olsen, employed on the dismantling of the brick building on the corner of the Square and Rangitikei street and known as G. and C.’s corner. A brick became dislodged and hit the unfortunate man on the head, necessitating his removal to hospital. The bricks from the dismantled portion are wheeled in barrows along a stageway above and there ejected into a chute which bring them down to a staging from which they are again dispatched by a second chute to the lorries standing below in the courtyard at (he rear of the premises. It, was during the progress of the transportation of the bricks that one went hurtling down, where Mr. Olsen received its full force on the head. Olsen’s condition, following upon an operation last evening, is now considered to be satisfactory. ACCIDENT AT LONGBURN Another unfortunate accident occurred yesterday morning at the Longburn freezing works when a workman, Jack Cookston, whose home is in Wellington, fell from a scaffolding, striking a pipe. He suffered injuries to his back and he was conveyed to the hospital by the Free Ambulance. Last evening Cookston’s condition was reported to be satisfactory, lie will, undergo an X-ray examination this j morning.
