From Our Own Correspondent. School Matters. Mr. .T. K. Hornblow (chairman) presided over the monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School Commfttee which was held on Monday evening. Others present were Messrs S. K. Cowley, G. F. Smith, P. .t. Mail's, W. K. McKenzie, H. J. Reid and It. ltangiheuea. An apology for absence was received from Mr. M. E. Perreau. Correspondence from the Education Board confirmed the appointment of Mr. C. AV. Smith as assist- ! ant master and notified that ho would I take up his duties on the 21st Instant. I A letter was received from the Education Board, notifying that special grant for incidental allowance on account of secondarv department would be reduced by one-third, and that the amount for the current year would be £lO 13s Id. The chairman said that the reduction would further curtail the committee's Income. The headmaster reported that the roll numbers-for the first term were: IPrimary 331, secondary 61. Attendances | throughout the term had been very seriously affected by the prevailing epidemic I of mumps and measles, the total number i of absentees from this cause alone being: 1 Primary 253, secondary 20. Mr. McKen'zie intimated that the Unemployment | Board had cancelled work under the No. 1 5 scheme to school committees. It was resolved to inform the headmaster to this I effect and also to regret inability to j undertake the work owing" to lack of ; funds. It was decided to communicate ! with the board’s architect regarding the i levelled area in order that it could be made use of for school games, etc., and I also with regard to blinds and other re- ! pairs. Regarding a request front the , Basketball Association for permission to use the school courts for Saturday afternoon matches, it was decided to accede , to the request provided the association assisted to put the courts in order and I that the courts are not required for school games. Messrs Smith. McKenzie and Reid were appointed a visiting committee. It was decided to hold a special meeting to discuss the financial position and adopt a works policy. Dorcas Society. The Rev. H. fci. Kenney presided over the annual meeting of the Foxton Dorcas Society on Monday afternoon, there being a good attendance of members pre- ! sent. The election of officers resulted as : follows: —President, Rev. H. S. Kenney; honjs,secreta.ry and treasurer, Mrs. I'. A. Maston; committee, Mesdames M. R. I erreau, F. Procter, D. Barron, Moore, Symons, Bennett, Christie, Mairs, Brown, McDonald and Rev. Fotheringham, Rev. IW. McDonald and Adjutant Grey. Ihe ! society wishes to make a strong appeal for parcels of clothing, blankets, boots, I shoes, etc., and donations -of money will ■ be very gratefully received. Personal. Miss Nola Huse, of Uiaudelands, Hamil- ! ton, who has been spending a holiday in Foxton, left yesterday for Wanganui, I where she will spend a few days prior to 1 returning to her home. •, Mr and Mrs. T. Iluanui with a cargo of coal from Collingwood arrived in port on Sundav afternoon. Discharging operations were completed on Monday afternoon, since when the vessel has been held up owing to the heavy seas at Manawatu Heads.
