Mid-week Hockey Played in Mud

A closo acquaintance -with t.hc Sportsground mud was the privilege of play-, ers in the mid-week hockey competi-. tions of the Manawatu Association yesterday. The playing surfaces cut up badly at an early stage, so that tapping the ball was the art of the day. A feature was the wide margin by which victory was attained in several of the games, indicating that the winning forward combinations were handling their job well. Senior Phoenix 3 v. P.D.C. 0— Phoenix; worked like trojans, making the most of positional' play and maintaining an almost constant pressure on tho P.D.C. goal-mouth. Tho Reds found Drinkwater, a recent acquisition from Dannevirko, a tower of strength as leftback, his play being at onco defensive and aggressive. Tho Phoenix attackers combined excellently, and Lundy, McMinn, and Morgan each scored once. The gamp was mafred by too-frequent

talking. Referees were Messrs L. .Martin and V. Wallis. Combined Services G v. Massey College 0. —A good game was offered by these teams, but the College boys a\cio noticeably lacking in finish to their i play. Possibly their comparative newness as a team was in part responsible. Services drew their goals from the usual sources —Monteith (3), Phiips (2) and McGavin. Messrs D. Wilton and K. L. C. Aitchison refereed. ! Central 0.8. 7 v. Broadway o.—As | the result suggests, C. 0.8. dominated a i large proportion of the play, with j Broadway only intermittently on the attack. R. Hoaro was in form, netting | four times; M. (Morrie) Smith (2) and Bentley accounted for the rest. The referees were Messrs C. A. V oss and M. Levy. Junior . Broadway B 6 v. C. 0.8. B 2. For the winners, Tozer (2), Pask (-), Quigan and Page scored, with P. Comber and W. Barratt netting for C. 0.8. Many players hero showed an inadequate knowledge of the game, ‘ sticks and offside being frequent. Messrs H. [Byers and WrH. Wilson refereed. | Massey College B G v. Phoenix B 0. —Merrit, with threo goals, was prominent in the College line, while Rudall (2) and Suckling helped to make the issue secure. Messrs X. W. Gcrrand and R. L. C. Aitchison refereed. In the senior scries Palmerston i North, and in the juniors Combined Services B, drew a bye.
