When not at war, China has famine, floods and earthquakes, which actually take a tremendous toll.
Official reports from Nanking show that in the Yellow river floods this winter approximately 50,000 persons lost their lives, with 2,000,000 adversely affected and 1,000,000 starving and receiving relief. A brief message now reports an earthquake in Western Szeckuen. It is estimated that at least 7000 Chinese perished during three shakes which rocked the Mowsien. and Heisuikow districts, where thousands of houses collapsed. Investigators consider it the worst calamity of its kind in the past century.
